Head Impact against Automotive Trim Pillar

  • In this simulation we've analyzed the energy loads created during a collision as an occupant's head impacts the vehicle's pillar trim. By incorporating a complex series ribs into the back side of the trim component, the total energy of the impact event can be absorbed more slowly and consistently, thereby reducing significantly the maximum force loads and acceleration imparted to the occupant's head. The pillar must be flexible enough minimize the maximum transient force loads, while at the same time retain enough rigidity so that it does not collapse entirely into the underlying metal structure producing a bottoming-out effect where force loads again become dangerously high. As with other applications, our CAD analysis can significantly reduce the need for costly and time-consuming real-world testing.
